Geometry solver for iPhone
A geometry solver that shows the theorem, not just the number.
Scan a geometry problem and MathScans names the theorem, substitutes your numbers, and works through to the answer with every step explained. Pythagoras, area, angles and more, animated and read aloud.

A worked example
From a right triangle to the answer.
A right triangle with legs 6 and 8, solving for the hypotenuse. Here is how MathScans works it, naming the theorem first so you see where the numbers come from rather than just c = 10.
- 01
Name the theorem
a² + b² = c²
A right triangle with legs 6 and 8, solving for the hypotenuse. The Pythagorean theorem links the three sides, and naming it is the move that turns a picture into an equation.
- 02
Substitute the known sides
6² + 8² = c²
The two legs are 6 and 8, so they take the places of a and b. The hypotenuse c is the unknown we are solving for.
- 03
Simplify the left side
100 = c²
6 squared is 36 and 8 squared is 64, and 36 plus 64 is 100. So c squared is 100.
- 04
Take the square root
c = 10
The square root of 100 is 10, so the hypotenuse is 10. The length is positive, so the negative root is discarded.
Why the working matters
Geometry is knowing which theorem to reach for.
The hard part of a geometry problem is rarely the arithmetic. It is spotting that this is a Pythagoras problem, or that these angles are supplementary. Once the right theorem is named, the rest is substitution.
So MathScans leads with the theorem and explains why it applies, then shows the substitution and the working. The animated player replays a step and the narration reads it aloud, so the reasoning is easy to follow and easier to remember.
Learn which theorem fits which problem, and the next one solves itself.

Questions about the geometry solver
- What geometry problems can it solve?
- It is strongest on the calculation side of geometry: the Pythagorean theorem, area and perimeter, the volume and surface area of solids, angle relationships, and problems that turn into an equation to solve. It names the theorem or formula, substitutes your numbers, and works through to the answer with the reasoning shown.
- Can it read a geometry diagram from a photo?
- It reads the numbers, labels and equations in a problem well. A figure that is mostly a drawing, with the key information carried by the picture rather than written on it, is harder for any camera solver, so for those it helps to type the given values. For the computational problems that make up most geometry homework, scanning works smoothly.
- Does the geometry solver show steps or just the answer?
- The full working. Each step names the theorem or formula, shows the substitution, and explains why in plain language, so you can reproduce the method on the next problem rather than only reading off a number.
- Is there a free geometry solver that shows steps?
- Some apps include step-by-step geometry in a free tier, so if cost is your only constraint you have options. MathScans opens with a 3-day free trial on the monthly plan, then it is $9.99 a month or $4.99 a week. The trial lets you test the read quality and the explanations on your own problems first.
- Which iPhone and iOS version do I need?
- MathScans runs on iPhone and requires iOS 17 or later. It works on iPad in iPhone compatibility mode, though it is not yet optimised for the larger screen, and there is no Android version at present.
