Comparison, updated October 2026
Looking for a Gauthmath alternative?
Gauth, once called Gauthmath, has grown into a study app for almost everything. It covers math and the sciences, has an AI tutor you can talk to, and connects you with human experts.
That is a lot of app if math is all you need. This page compares Gauth with MathScans, a math-only app, and is honest about where Gauth is still the better choice.
Disclosure: MathScans is our own app.
Every Gauth fact on this page comes from its US App Store listing and privacy label, checked in October 2026. Gauth does several things MathScans does not, and we list them below.
MathScans vs Gauth at a glance

Is Gauth free?
You can download Gauth and use it without paying, but the free version has limits. Its listing does not say exactly where those limits sit.
Gauth Plus removes them. It adds unlimited detailed explanations, what Gauth calls enhanced AI accuracy, advanced tutor sessions, a library of tutorial videos and practice questions, and priority help from experts.
In the US, Plus costs $11.99 a month, $31.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. That is more per month than MathScans, but Plus covers far more than math, so the fair question is how much of it you would use.
Why people look for a Gauth alternative
The first reason is focus. Gauth has added science, writing tools, flashcards and a study timer, and at 203 MB it is a large download. If you only open it for math, most of it is in the way.
The second is the paywall. The free version limits the detailed explanations, which are usually the part you need when you are stuck.
The third is privacy. Gauth's privacy label declares that identifiers may be used to track you, which some parents of younger students would rather avoid.

What MathScans does differently
Every explanation, on every problem
Each step names what was done in plain words, then shows the equation after it. You see the reasoning, not just a list of lines.
Nothing is held back for a higher tier. There is one subscription, and every explanation comes with every solution.

A walkthrough of your own problem
Press play and the solution moves one step at a time, with each term shifting into place. You can pause, rewind or slow it down.
It feels like a short lesson on the exact problem from your worksheet, rather than a general video on the topic.

Narration in 19 languages
Every step can be read aloud using your iPhone's built-in voices. You pick the language in Settings, and it applies to every solution.
That helps students who learn by listening, and families where math homework is in a different language from the one spoken at home.

What the privacy labels say
Every App Store listing has a privacy label written by the developer. It is the quickest way to compare what two apps say they collect.
Gauth's label lists identifiers under data used to track you. It also links contact info, photos you upload, usage data and diagnostics to your account.
MathScans declares no tracking and contains no ad SDKs. It does link your email, the photos you scan, purchases and in-app usage to your account, because it needs them to run. Labels are self-reported by developers, ours included.

Where Gauth is still the better choice
If you need help with chemistry, physics or biology as well as math, Gauth does it in one app. MathScans cannot help with any of those.
Gauth also has people behind it. When the AI is not enough, you can ask a human expert, and its AI tutor lets you talk a problem through out loud. MathScans has neither.
It runs on iPad and Android as well as iPhone, its interface comes in 14 languages, and 1.5 million ratings at 4.8 stars is a strong track record. MathScans is iPhone only and too new to be rated.
Who should switch, and who should stay
Switch to MathScans if
- Math is the only subject you need help with
- You want every explanation included without a premium tier
- You would rather your homework app declared no tracking
- You learn better when steps are animated and read aloud
Stay with Gauth if
- You want one app for math, science and writing
- You value being able to ask a human expert
- You use an iPad or Android phone
- The free version already covers what you need
Other Gauth alternatives worth knowing
Photomath, owned by Google, is math only like MathScans and shows basic and animated steps for free. Our Photomath alternatives page explains what its free tier includes.
Symbolab suits students who prefer to type and who study past first-year calculus. See our Symbolab alternative page for how it compares with a camera-first app.
Mathway covers a very wide range of math and physics but keeps steps behind a subscription, as our Mathway alternative page explains. The best math solver apps comparison puts all five side by side.
How to try it before you pay
Start the monthly plan, which comes with a 3-day free trial. Then scan three or four math problems you would normally take to Gauth, ideally ones you are stuck on.
Play the walkthrough on at least one and turn on narration. Then ask which explanation you could repeat in a test without the app.
If MathScans does not help, cancel in your iPhone's Settings at least a day before the trial ends and you will not be charged.
